Aregbesola And Ben Bruce Clash Over Donating His Wardrobe Allowance To Osun Workers

Senator Ben Murray-Bruce representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, has said that in the spirit of the month of Ramadan observed by Muslim faithfuls, he will not reply Governor Aregbesola who lampooned him over his decision to donate half of his wardrobe allowance (N500,000) to the unpaid workers in Osun state.

“I’ll take whatever attacks come my way but nothing and nobody can dissuade me from doing what my conscience directs in helping my fellow man.

It will be recalled that Governor Rauf Aregbesola who has been unable to pay his workers for more than seven months ridiculed the gesture of the lawmaker in a statement, describing it as the height of hypocrisy.

The governor, in a statement by the Director. Bureau of Communication and Strategy Office, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, asked why it was Osun State – out of the over 15 states that had not paid salaries – that Murray-Bruce wanted to donate his money to. He concluded by saying Senator Ben Murray-Bruce was only playing to the gallery.

The whole clash started after Murray-Bruce, a PDP member, said on his official Twitter handle that he would donate his wardrobe allowance of over N500,000 to the unpaid workers in Osun State and widows in his home state of Bayelsa.

Murray-Bruce had said he would give half of the money to the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Osun State who would distribute the money to the unpaid workers, and the other half to Bayelsa Widows which has now resulted in an altercation between both parties.

APC refutes claims VP was denied access to meeting

There has been speculation about an incident where Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was prevented from attending Buhari’s meeting with the National Security Adviser because of security reasons by the President.

Reacting to this report, the SSA to President Buhari on Media Garba Shehu said, “That is the creation of someone who just wanted to write something. It was on the same day he travelled to Sudan to represent the President, the government and the people of Nigeria at the inauguration of the president of that country.

“He couldn’t have been present in two places at the same time. Osinbajo is the Vice-President of Nigeria. In the absence of the President, he is the President. So, there cannot be dark corners into which he will not be allowed. It is not true.”

Speaking on the National Assembly crisis, the presidential spokesperson expressed conviction that the party with the majority, the All Progressives Congress, and the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party, would coexist harmoniously.
On Tuesday, against the directive of the APC, Senator Bukola Saraki was elected unopposed as President of the 8th Senate. Fifty-one senators, include the party’s preferred candidate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, were absent. Saraki and Lawan have been engaged in a fierce contest to clinch the Senate top job.

The other senators were at the International Conference Centre, on the invitation of Buhari, who had called the meeting to resolve the National Assembly leadership crisis, at the time Saraki was declared Senate President.

Nigeria Govt says, Unemployed and poor Nigerians to get N5000 monthly

The Buhari Administration at the weekend declared that there are ongoing plans to implement one of its striking campaign promises that it will pay N5000 each to the poorest Nigerians across the country.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who gave the hint noted that government is “currently evaluating the best ways to collapse existing cash transfer and social welfare schemes to ensure consistency and alignment.

“Once this is completed, we will implement the first phase of this program, using recognized identification platforms and transparent payment solutions”, he added.

Osinbajo who disclosed this at the 10th Year Anniversary Lecture of Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State titled, ‘The Nigerian Economy and the Future’, also said the federal government has identified the weak transmission grid, which prevents the wheeling of more than 5,000MW as a gridlock to be removed.

He assured that the Buhari administration would work with the distribution companies to ensure the necessary investment to get electricity to consumers is in place.

On the pervasive poverty ravaging the country, Osinbajo said the payment of N5000 each to poor Nigerians was necessary because “we cannot talk about the economy of the future without addressing how we move people out of poverty.

“One of the most striking promises we made during the campaign was the payment of Five Thousand Naira to the poorest Nigerians across the country”, he noted, even as he regretted that today, “about 112 million (66% of Nigerians) are deemed extremely poor, measured by World Bank parameter of those living on less than US$1.25 per day.”

The Vice President observed that the level of poverty explains much of the Nigerian situation because it affects all aspects of life, including why over a million Nigerians die yearly of preventable diseases.

“It reflects in our alarming rates of infant mortality and maternal deaths at childbirth. It also tells why so many children of school age are out of school and why so many adults lack access to healthcare and proper vocational training; why, in effect, they are less efficient and less productive at work”, Osinbajo noted.

Giving a succinct analysis of the nation’s economy, the VP said, “The vexed questions of the day pertain mainly to the economy. What is the real state of affairs? With so much reliance on a single commodity, how do we survive in an era of oil glut and falling commodity prices?

Unfortunately, you don’t know if you’ll be able to make it that far. You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

Since many people are alone when they suffer heart attack without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.

Stolen baby found after 17 years in South Africa

A baby stolen from her sleeping mother's arms shortly after birth has been found by the family through an astonishing coincidence 17 years later, South African police say.

DNA tests have confirmed that the older girl is the daughter of Celeste and Morne Nurse, who was snatched from Groote Schuur hospital as a three-day-old baby named Zephany in April 1997.

The parents, who later had three more children, have celebrated Zephany's birthday every year since she was kidnapped, never giving up hope that their first-born child would come back to them some day, the Cape Argus said.
